The Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) represents a significant initiative by the Government of India, launched in 2014 as part of the Digital India Initiative. This application is designed specifically for government employees who are registered within the attendance portal, facilitating a systematic approach to attendance marking that emphasizes punctuality and transparency.

AEBAS restricts attendance marking to government officers and employees, thereby ensuring that only authorized personnel can register their attendance. Initially, the application utilized fingerprint and iris scanning technology for biometric verification. However, responding to evolving needs, the AEBAS team has developed a software solution that incorporates face-based Aadhaar authentication in collaboration with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

During the attendance marking process, users enter their attendance ID and present their face for verification. The software matches this biometric data against the UIDAI's Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR). Upon successful authentication, attendance is recorded almost instantaneously, typically within two to three seconds.

The procedure for face-based authentication mirrors that of previous biometric methods: users input their attendance ID and are prompted to display their face. Upon successful completion, they receive confirmation of their attendance status—either marked as present or absent.
